The digestion of heather (Calluna vulgaris) by red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus).

چکیده
I. In the wild, red grouse live largely on heather, a high-fibre (25 :(,), low-protein (7 %) food. Digestibility trials were carried out under semi-natural conditions, with magnesium as a digestibility marker. T w o trials w-ere done, one in autumn and one in spring. 2. Digestibility of the dry matter varied from 21 to 30 ”/o and metabolizable energy from 1.1 to 1.6 kcal/g. Thcse variations were inversely related to intake and could partly be accounted for by facultative variations in holocellulose and lignin digestion. 3. Digestion of soluble carbohydrates, protein (measured as a-amino-nitrogen) and holocellulose varied between trials according to the initial concentration in the food. The digestibility of soluble carbohydrate was high (78-83 7”) in autumn (16 yo in food) and low (61-66 Yo) in spring (I I ?& in food) and that of protein was relatively low (24-31 %) in autumn (6 01; in food) and high (42-48 yo) in spring (7 % in food). Digestibility of crude fat was 30-33 % for four birds and 20 7’0 for one bird. 4. By comparison with poultry, voluntary intake of dry matter was very high relative to bodyweight and intake of ener gyappeared to be adequate. None the less, all birds lost weight during the trials, presumably for reasons other than energy shortage. 5. Urate excretion increased in parallel with body-weight losses, but formed only 2 ?& of the total N output at low weight losses, in which event the main nitrogenous compounds in the droppings were a-amino N (presumably largely from undigested protein), ammonium salts and ornithuric acid. 6 . The ornithuric acid was presumably a detoxication product of prolignins and possibly tannins and other polyphenols. Its excretion by grouse corresponds to the excretion of hippuric acid by ruminants.

Vegetation Analysis of the Territorial Boundary between Red Grouse (lagopus Lagopus Scoticus) and Ptarmigan (lagopus Mutus)
The location of the boundary between the territories of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) and ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) is related to the vegetation of the hills where both these species occur. If the vegetation is dominated by tall, vigorous Calluna vulgaris, grouse occur. At greater altitudes where Calluna is shorter and less vigorous, significant levels of Empetrum hermaphroditum and Vac...
متن کاملThe dynamics of nematode transmission in the red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) : studies on the recovery of Trichostrongylus tenuis larvae from vegetation
Attempts to recover the infective third-stage larvae of Trichostrongylus tenuis from heather (Calluna vulgaris) vegetation in the field are rarely successful because the larvae may be: (i) concealed within heather leaflets; (ii) concentrated in dew droplets which are lost from the plants upon sampling; or (iii) simply highly aggregated in the field. Heather plants were exposed to T. tenuis larv...
متن کاملThe role of invertebrates in the diet, growth and survival of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) chicks
The role of diet on the growth, survival and movement of red grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus chicks was examined. We compared two areas of moorland in Scotland: a dry heath with a low density of red grouse and poor chick survival; and a wetter heath/bog with relatively higher red grouse numbers and higher rates of chick survival. There were no differences in clutch size or the proportion of egg...
متن کاملRising burden of immature sheep ticks (Ixodes ricinus) on red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) chicks in the Scottish uplands.
The sheep tick Ixodes ricinus (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) is an ectoparasite of major economic and pathogenic importance in Scotland. Its distribution in the Scottish uplands is assumed to be governed by the abundance and distribution of its definitive hosts (deer and sheep) and climatic variables such as temperature and rainfall. As the numbers of its major host in Scotland, red deer, have increase...
متن کاملLocal genetic structure in red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus): evidence from microsatellite DNA markers.
Allelic variation at seven hypervariable tri- and tetranucleotide microsatellite loci was used to determine levels of population differentiation between 14 populations of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) in northeast Scotland, UK. Despite the potential for long-distance dispersal in grouse, and a semicontinuous habitat, significant population divergence was observed (mean RST = 0.153; P < ...
